Elmo 2 Fire burning 7,000 acres; 0% content

UPDATE: 3:33 PM – July 30, 2022

ELMO – The Elmo 2 Fire, burning four miles west of Elmo, has burned 7,000 acres and is 0% contained.

About 100 people are assigned to fight the fire that ignited Friday evening in the Deep Draw area along Highway 28. The CSKT Fire Division reports that the fire started in the grass , then made its way through the woods north of Highway 28.

“Fire consumes thick standing and dead wood that has not seen fire in several decades,” an update notes.

Fire managers note that hot, dry conditions combined with gusty winds are expected to increase fire behavior. Heavy tankers, single engine tankers (SEAT) and helicopters are being used to stop the fire from spreading north and west.

Highway 28 is closed to traffic. Although the evacuation of Chief Cliff Estates has been lifted, homes south of Lake Mary Road remain in evacuation status. Meanwhile, the Lake County Emergency Management Office is advising residents of the Black Lake and Lake Mary Ronan area to prepare to evacuate if the Elmo 2 fire moves in that direction.

Additionally, drivers are urged to be aware of hazards in the vicinity of the fire area, including smoke and fire department vehicles, when driving on U.S. Highway 93.

The Elmo 2 fire has forced road closures, evacuations and the closure of two state parks.

A Type II team has been ordered and will likely arrive on Sunday or Monday. While the Montana DNRC Wildfire Dashboard declares the fire to be human-caused, the CSKT Fire Division update says the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Power is out from Lakeside to Elmo. However, Mission Valley Power said in a social network post on Saturday that they were in the process of restarting the Elmo substation.

The Montana Red Cross operates a shelter for fire evacuees at Linderman School on East Fourth Avenue in Polson. Residents can also request services by calling 800-272-6668.

Red Cross officials told MTN News that 16 people used the shelter overnight Friday.

Evacuations have been lifted for residents along Montana’s Route 28, according to a social media post by Lake County officials.

However, the Lake County Office of Emergency Management notes that residents will be required to report to law enforcement upon their return.

Additionally, OEM notes that residents of the Black Lake and Lake Mary Ronan area should be prepared to evacuate if the Elmo 2 fire moves in that direction.

The Montana Department of Transportation reports Highway 28 is still closed between milepost 36.0 and milepost 46.7 due to fire activity.

Drivers along US Highway 93 should be aware of firefighters in the area and are urged not to stop in the area.

Boaters should stay away from the Elmo Bay area of ​​Flathead Lake due to firefighting aircraft in the area.

The Red Cross reports that 16 people used an evacuation shelter set up at Linderman School in Polson on Friday evening.

According to the City of Polson Fire Department, the evacuation zone has been extended to Lake Mary Ronan Road from milepost 5 to US Highway 93.

Lake County Sheriff Don Bell is asking boaters to avoid the Elmo Bay area where planes are collecting water to fight the blaze.

The Montana DNRC Wildfire Dashboard lists the blaze as human-caused.

The Polson Chamber of Commerce announced that free pancake breakfasts will be provided to evacuees staying at the Linderman Gym.

It should be noted that no additional donations or volunteers are needed at this time.
