As the monkeypox outbreak continues to spread around the world, cases in US states are on the rise – with three governors declaring states of emergency last week.
Confirmed cases of monkeypox have now passed 23,600 worldwide, according to Monday numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The epidemic, first spotted in Europe at the end of Aprilhas reached 80 countries – the vast majority in countries that had not previously had significant cases of the rare viral infection.
The World Health Organization has declared that monkeypox was a global health emergency late last month.
The United States had reported more than 5,800 confirmed cases starting Monday, according to the CDC. Highly populated states lead the numbers – with 1,390 cases in New York, followed by 827 cases in California.

States declare monkeypox emergency
On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announcement a state of emergency, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has declared the outbreak a public health emergency. Declaring an emergency increases resources such as the distribution of vaccines.
“We will continue to work with the federal government to get more vaccines, raise awareness about harm reduction, and support the LGBTQ community in the fight against stigma,” Newsom said in a statement Monday.
On Friday, Governor Kathy Hochul also said New York‘s epidemic like a state disaster emergency.

Public health emergency in the United States?
On Monday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said 1.1 million doses of monkeypox vaccine have been distributed across the country, including 737,000 doses in the past few days. .
When asked if President Joe Biden plans to declare a nationwide public health emergency, Jean-Pierre said the decision is up to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
But “we are considering all policy options to help end this outbreak,” she said. “It’s urgent, and it’s important to us.”

Monkeypox does not usually cause serious illness, but it can lead to hospitalization or death. The virus is transmitted through close physical contact. The current outbreak is affecting some populations more than others, including men who have sex with men, but health officials stress that the virus can infect anyone.
