2022 Eagles training camp day 8: Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown put on a show at the Linc

It was Jalen Hurts’ 24th birthday on Sunday and he was able to spend it at the Linc with almost 30,000 of his best friends.

It was a fun evening.

Despite a warm evening, the Eagles nearly filled the lower bowl at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday night for their only public practice of training camp. The Eagles have a tour on Monday and will be back in practice on Tuesday.

To comments:

1. Even public practice will not displace housekeeping. Structure is important:

• You know it deepens in training camp when the injury report continues to grow. The Eagles were already without Jordan Mailata (concussion) and Andre Dillard (concussion) and now they’ve added Le’Raven Clark (hamstring) to the roster. This means they were on their fourth left tackle (Kayode Awosika) on Sunday night. More on that in a moment. But the Eagles also brought back tackle Jarrid Williams for obvious reasons. The UDFA was with them not long ago. The list is full at 91.

• Javon Hargrave has also joined the injury report with a groin injury. Other players who did not practice on Sunday: Grant Calcaterra (hamstring), DeVonta Smith (groin), Jimmy Moreland (ankle), Boston Scott (concussion), Jaquiski Tartt (personal reasons), Kary Vincent (groin) , Greg Ward (toe).

• During training, it appears that JJ Arcega-Whitside suffered an arm/shoulder injury. He came shortly after an impressive diving catch. Something to watch out for.

2. The highlight of Sunday night’s practice was a deep ball from Hurts to AJ Brown. Hurts dropped him in the bucket despite tight coverage from James Bradberry for a 30-yard touchdown. Hurts hit Brown a ton throughout training camp and that didn’t change under the Linc lights.

3. Hurts also showed off her legs on Sunday night. That part of his game isn’t always shown as part of practice, but it was in this session. In one particular practice, Hurts had four runs, including one that left Brandon Graham gripping the air.

It was awfully reminiscent of the big juke run against the Saints last season. This is the second such race I can remember from Hurts this summer.

4. The Eagles were down to their fourth left tackle on Sunday and it showed. Josh Sweat was feasting on Awosika at the start of practice. This had the potential to completely derail the offense. Eventually, Sweat was off the field in favor of Derek Barnett. Maybe it was out of pity.

5. Speedy running back Jason Huntley is starting to pile on good days. Without Scott (concussion), Huntley gets more reps and makes the most of it. He broke a 50+ streak down the left sideline. Huntley has impressed me with his tenacity over the past few days, seeking contact, but what always comes out of him is that flurry. This came to light at the Linc.

6. TJ Edwards makes a big play every practice. In the last period of this training, he almost had a diving interception on a pass from Hurts in the middle of the field. If he had managed to secure it, this choice would have been the game of the day. Still, a diving PBU deserves a mention.

seven. Tight end Noah Togiai (an Eagle Eye podcast favorite) had notable catches on Sunday from Gardner Minshew and Reid Sinnett. Without Calcaterra and now possibly without JJAW, Togiai can show off his abilities. He’s still a long way off making the roster, but he could stay on the practice squad.

8. Another long shot to make the team is Deon Cain. But the receiver, who wears No. 85, has caught a ton of passes during this camp. Again, probably not a spot for him on the roster, but he’s making a strong push.

9. Tarron Jackson had some flash games on Sunday. The second-year defensive end got some first-team reps as the defense rotated and made them count. He should be the fourth DE on the list.

ten. Midway through practice, Sinnett ended up taking second-team reps for a period. Minshew appeared unhurt and took second-team reps later that night, but Sinnett got his first second-team reps of the summer. Sinnett is clearly ahead of rookie Carson Strong for third-place QB.

Stupid observation of the night: At the start of practice, Hurts and Brown each threw a football into the stands to the fans. So two lucky Eagles fans walked out of the Linc with a pretty cool souvenir.
