MIAMI SPRINGS, FLA. (WSVN) – There is a large police presence in Miami Springs confirmed to be linked to a police shooting in Miami, which seriously injured an officer and killed a robbery suspect.
Miami Springs police officers were dispatched to the 101 Fairway Drive area on Tuesday to assist Miami-Dade Police in an active investigation.
According to sources, the joint investigation is linked to the shooting of an MDPD officer in Liberty City.
The MDPD had invaded the Extended Stay America suites, while they were executing a search warrant. Officers exchanged fire towards the second floor of the building and damaged one of the windows.
“I heard ‘pa, pa, pa’,” said Iris, a witness.
Iris was staying two doors down from the suite the officers were targeting. She said she heard the commotion and heard a man say…
“I’m going to kill him, I don’t care,” Iris said.
Cellphone video showed an officer running out of the hotel with a child in his arms. Other guests were also seen rushing out of the building.
“All I did was open the door, the policeman grabbed my arm and said, ‘Run!’ said Iris.
“There was a confrontation with a subject armed with an AK-47 type rifle,” MDPD director Freddy Ramirez said.
Ramirez confirmed that the suspect they were looking for did not survive.
He also said the search warrant was related to Monday’s investigation involving one of their officers, 29-year-old Cesar Echevarry, who was shot dead.
“It’s part of the flight. This is part of the overall investigation into the theft that has triggered the past 24 hours of tragic events involving one of our officers,” Ramirez said.
On Monday night, people heard multiple gunshots on Northwest 17th Avenue and 62nd Street in Miami, but the investigation began earlier in the day after a store was robbed in Dania Beach.
“They said they had guns,” a witness said.
The witness told 7News that his friend walked on the crime.
“The guys were inside. They locked the door. When they got inside, they looked at them and shook their heads and said, ‘It’s not happening’,” the witness said.
Detectives were looking for a white car involved in the theft. Police said they were hit in Miami Springs, then officers spotted the vehicle in the evening in Miami.
Over the police radio, a responding officer could be heard saying: “62 [Street] and 17 [Avenue]. Units coming from the east, avoid this. They have to come north or south on 17th Avenue. The east side is going to be a hot side. They’re going to have a barricaded subject with a gun.
According to detectives, Jeremy Horton had desperately tried to flee from police before crashing.
Cellphone video shows Horton fleeing the car on foot after crashing into a light poll.
Officers, including Echevarry, followed closely.
“Our officers, including Echy, as brave as they were, fled on foot after the subject, so that he was not a threat to our community,” Ramirez said.
Moments later, shots were exchanged between Horton and the officers, and Horton succumbed to his injuries.
Echevarry had also been seriously injured after being shot and was quickly taken to hospital by another fellow officer.
“We suffer, but we persevere. We are moving forward for our community, for our officer, for the officer’s family,” Ramirez said.
The investigation is still ongoing.
