First tastes of sound borders indicated an open-world action game that was far from a release state. But if a seemingly unintended revelation from Sega is to be believed, it’s due out soon: Nove8mber 2022, right in the middle of the busiest release cadence on the horizon. [Update, 2:37 p.m. ET: Sega confirmed the release date at today’s Gamescom event.]

sound borders, first announced during The Game Awards 2021, is the blue hedgehog’s first foray into an open-world format. Vast secluded grass fields. Abandoned, ancient ruins. Dark music. Borders appeared as Sonic designed using a breath of the wild control List. Originally given a late 2022 release date, premieres this summer blasted how he didn’t feel like a Sonic game (in other words, no loop of loops). The consensus, more or less, was basically: This thing needs a little more time in the oven. It felt empty and failed to capture the bravado that defined its predecessors and made (some of them) such a joy to play.

More time in the oven seems like the last thing sound borders will get. The game is expected to be one of the headliners of today’s Gamescom Opening Night Live showcasebut before the event, Sega seems to have inadvertently released a Japanese TV spot setting a November 8, 2022 release date for sound borders. As previously confirmed, it will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.

The ad itself was quickly set to private, but not before several unaffiliated accounts grabbed it and re-uploaded it. It’s brief – only 30 seconds – but it’s more like “a Sonic game” than the previous images, showing Sonic tearing through natural environments: a forest, a mechanized bridge, the walls of a canyon. At the end of the clip, it culminates with the crisp guitar so commonly associated with the series, as Sonic scales a cliff and gazes out over a mountain range. (Those OTW the comparisons were indeed appropriate.)

A representative for Sega did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.

If the leak turns out to be true, Sonic Frontiers is landing during the busiest release period of the year. About a week before, WB Games will release Gotham Knights, an open-world cooperative action game based on DC’s anti-heroes. This is immediately followed by a new Call of Duty Game. sound borders himself will share a release date with Skull and bonesthe repeatedly delayed Ubisoft pirate game (born year Assassin’s Creed spinoff), which comes out just a day before Sony releases the most anticipated game of the year: God of War Ragnarök. And then, of course, ten days later, the juggernaut of the season’s almost guaranteed sales: Pokemon Scarlet and Purple.

Earlier this summer, IGN released a series of videos explore more sound borders, including how combat works and what the open world actually looks like. The series did not help the game’s image. Following an outpouring of fan backlash – including some calls for Sega to delay the game – Sega’s Takashi Iizuka, who leads Sonic Team, responded to the criticism.

“It’s not really surprising,” Iizuka said. VGC in an interview. “We realize that everyone is just reacting to the videos they’ve seen, and because they don’t understand what this new gameplay is, they kind of compare it to other games they already know. “
