5 shot, 2 confirmed dead in Northwest Washington, DC – NBC4 Washington

Five men were shot – two of them fatally – in Washington, DC on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The shooting was reported at the corner of O Street NW and North Capitol Street, just north of New York Avenue in the Truxton Circle neighborhood.

DC and DC Fire & EMS police were called to the area to the report of multiple people being shot. Units arrived shortly after 12:45 p.m. and found several people shot dead in the street.

According to police, a dark SUV pulled up and two gunmen jumped out and started shooting.

Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and three men were taken to hospital.

People who live and work in the area say the DC government needs to do more to make the neighborhood safer. Reporting by Paul Wagner of News4.

Executive Deputy Chief Ashan Benedict described the area as “an open-air drug market” which police regularly patrol.

“Five people were shot today,” he said. “This is unacceptable.”

The shooting was reported at the corner of O Street NW and N. Capitol Street, just north of New York Avenue.

According to police, the first call for help came from three members of the DC Fire Department who were on the block inspecting buildings.

“They were doing inspections in buildings in the area,” Benedict said. “I don’t have the exact locations, but as they were coming out of a building, they came to this block and found themselves in this situation.”

The scene is on a busy block near the So Others Might Eat homeless outreach program, Dunbar High School, and at least two elementary schools. Campuses were closed as school staff prepared for the new school year.

Police cordoned off the area to investigate. It was not immediately clear if they had a suspect.

Several streets were closed around the scene of the shooting, police said: First Street NW between O and P streets and the 1300 block of N. Capital Street. Metrobuses have been diverted until further notice.

There was no word on what could have led to the shooting.

The identity of the victims has not been released.

Police have cordoned off the area while they investigate.

Overnight, another fatal shooting occurred about half a block away.

During this incident, a 25-year-old man died and a woman was injured on Florida Avenue and N. Capitol Street. It was unclear whether these shootings could be linked.

So far this year, 136 people have died in homicides in the district, compared to 131 people at the same time last year, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Department. Overall, violent crimes increased by 2% and assaults with a dangerous weapon decreased by 11%.
