“Ben Affleck is a trap”

Kevin Smith I can’t tell if the dress Jennifer Lopez increased to her first of two wedding celebrations with her new husband Ben Affleck was on the poster of jersey girlas internet theorized those last weeks.

“Maybe that was it, I didn’t ask,” Smith told Yahoo Entertainment on Tuesday during a virtual press day for his latest film, Clerk IIIabout the established connection with jersey girl, the 2004 comedy he directed and in which the famous duo co-starred (see above). “When I saw them, I didn’t think, ‘Hey man, can you fix the internet for me? That would be good for my brand!'”

Smith saw the newlyweds at their second wedding last weekend at the sprawling Affleck estate in Georgia, where the power duo were originally going to wed before going their separate ways in 2004. (The director later cut their wedding scene from jersey girl, afraid it will distract viewers.)

This time, Smith tells us, was the stuff of a classic Hollywood romance.

“I was so overwhelmed by the wedding itself,” he says. “I’m a big fat romantic at heart, so I love love. And they have a fantastic love story that now has this beautiful ending – no end, no beginning, almost. They blocked the landing , closed the circle, so to speak.

“So I was going there by virtue of, ‘Yay, I can see what we almost saw many years ago. Good for those kids. They got it.’ What I got was deeply moving. We had a show that, a lot of people pay cash to go see a movie that makes them feel so good. It makes them believe in love… We got it for free, man. We just went to see our friend get married and it was one of the most deeply beautiful moments of my life, and it didn’t even happen to me.”

Smith was particularly moved to see his longtime friend Affleck, who he first managed in 1995 Mallrats, looking so happy. They made several memorable films together, including Chasing Amy (1997) and Dogma (1999) – although the pair then fell on hard times before rekindling their friendship and creative partnership when the actor appeared in 2019 Jay and Silent Bob reboot. (He also appeared in Clerk III.)

“I’ve known this cat for 27 years – we met when he came to audition for Mallrats, and then we became friends,” Smith says. “He’s one of my favorite people on the planet, one of my favorite artists, one of my favorite writers. That’s why I was so happy during their marriage, because they wrote vows together, and he wrote a great speech, and I was like, ‘Oooh, I’ll be listening to Ben Affleck read his speech all day. daytime.

“I saw him being happy. He’s a guy who won Oscars… I’ve never seen a human being, let alone him, as happy as he was when he was standing there and she was walking [down the aisle]… It was moving. I screamed from then on.”

Smith has nothing but good wishes for the happy couple.

“Jennifer Lopez is one of the luckiest people on the planet,” he says. “She just got Ben Affleck. Ben Affleck is a trap.”
