Two buses carrying migrants from Texas have arrived in Chicago Wednesday night.
The buses arrived at Union Station in Chicago around 7:30 p.m., carrying migrants who crossed the southern border illegally.
About 80 to 100 people were on the buses, including 20 to 30 young children. Many migrants said they were from Venezuela.
Chicago is the latest city where migrants have been bussed in from Texas, after New York and Washington, DC, all of which have Democratic mayors.
Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement that he looked forward to seeing Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot welcome the migrants because Chicago is a sanctuary city.
“President Biden’s inaction on our southern border continues to put the lives of Texans – and Americans – at risk and overwhelms our communities,” Abbott said. “To continue to provide much-needed relief to our small, overrun border towns, Chicago will join the other sanctuary cities of Washington, D.C. and New York as an additional drop-off location. Mayor Lightfoot likes to tout his city’s responsibility to host all regardless of their legal status, and I look forward to seeing that responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them.”
A statement from Abbott’s office said Chicago is being added as a “drop-off location” for future migrant buses in response to “President Biden’s open border policies that are overwhelming Texas border communities.”
A spokesperson for Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office said in a statement that Abbott was “without any shame or humanity.”
“As a city, we are doing everything we can to ensure that these immigrants and their families can receive shelter, food and, above all, protection. This is nothing new; Chicago welcomes hundreds of migrants every year. in our city and providing much-needed assistance,” a spokesperson for Lightfoot’s office said. “Sadly, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is shameless and unhumane. But since he instituted these racist eviction practices, we have been working with our community partners to prepare the city to receive these individuals.
New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, when meeting with the migrants on August 7, said Abbott’s actions were “horrible.”

“It’s horrible when you think about what the governor is doing,” Adams said.
After sending the migrants to New York, Abbott said the region was an “ideal destination for these migrants”.
“In addition to Washington, DC, New York is the perfect destination for these migrants, who can benefit from the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about in the sanctuary city,” Abbott said. “I hope he keeps his promise to welcome all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”
Abbott began sending migrants to Democratic-run cities in April, with the first migrant buses being sent to Washington, D.C.

Our partners were able to sort out the first bus, which included people wishing to settle outside the region. »
Bowser has twice requested assistance from the National Guard to help the thousands of migrants who have arrived in the area. Both requests were denied.
